Counterwood is a wood shop in the Smoky Mountains. We take commissions for countertops, live edge tables, vanities and headboards for cabins and homes across East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Every piece is drawn to the room it goes into.

Every job starts at the slab rack, not a catalog.

based in the smoky mountains

Counterwood builds custom countertops and interior accents. You pick the actual board with us, in person or on a video call, before anything gets cut.

We work almost entirely in Appalachian hardwood, most of it cut within a few counties of the shop. Walnut, white oak, cherry, maple and sycamore, kiln dried and left to acclimate before it goes on the bench. Dry areas get a hard wax oil finish. Anywhere water lives gets a catalyzed topcoat.

Counterwood is the fabrication side of an interior design studio, so we work on the whole room, not just the top. Cabinet reveals, faucet centers, stool clearance and the color of the cabinets all get settled on paper and templated on site before we cut.

    We carry no stock inventory. Every piece is drawn, templated and cut for one specific space, so the grain lands where you actually look.

    We pick the species to the room it lands in. Pale white oak and maple keep a bright kitchen bright. Walnut and cherry carry their own weight next to deeper cabinets.

  • built for rental duty

    A lot of what we build goes into short term rental cabins, so we specify finishes for guest traffic rather than for a photo shoot.

01 · most requested

Countertops

Kitchen islands, perimeter runs, bar tops and coffee bar tops. Waterfall ends are mitred so the grain wraps the corner without a break. Long spans and heavy use get full stave construction. When a board is good enough to keep whole, we run it as a single slab.

Live Edge Tables

Dining tables sized to the seat count you actually need, plus coffee tables we can cut from the same tree so a great room matches. We keep and stabilize the natural bark edge, and fill voids and checks with clear or smoked resin.

Vanities

Vanity tops cut to your rough in, or the whole floating cabinet built and hung. Vessel decks, undermount cutouts with sealed end grain, and faucet centers drilled off the spec sheet instead of guessed at on site.

04 · beds & bunks

Beds, Bunks & Headboards

Bunks are how a cabin sleeps eight instead of four. We build them in solid maple and white oak with live edge slab rails, pegged mortise and tenon joints, a 5 inch guard rail and a ladder with flat rungs. Kids get a bed they will not outgrow in two years. We also hang single slab headboards and build the platform frames under them.

process

From consultation to install

Five stages, roughly six to fourteen weeks depending on species, size and finish. You see the actual board before we cut it.

  1. step 01

    Consultation

    You send dimensions, a few photos of the room and the cabinet color. We talk through how the piece gets used and what budget range you are working in.

  2. step 02

    Slab selection

    We walk the rack together, in person or on a video call, and mark the board. You approve the grain, the sapwood line and the voids before anything is committed.

  3. step 03

    Design & template

    You get a scaled drawing with the edge profile, overhangs, cutouts and faucet centers. For counters and vanities we template the cabinet run on site, so the fit is measured rather than assumed.

  4. step 04

    Fabrication

    Flatten, joint, fill and stabilize. The edge is worked by hand. Dry areas get hard wax oil and wet areas get a catalyzed topcoat. We send photos at each stage.

  5. step 05

    Delivery & install

    Blanket wrapped, delivered and set. We handle the scribe, fastening and seam work on site, leave a care card, and stay reachable through the first season while the wood settles.

materials

Species & character

Appalachian hardwood, kiln dried and acclimated. If you are not sure which species you want, say so on the form. Matching wood to the room and to how it gets used is most of the job.

  • Walnut

    Dark chocolate heartwood with strong figure and a cream sapwood line. Our most requested species, and the one to pick when you want the top to be the loudest thing in the room.

  • White Oak

    Pale, tight, straight grain with ray fleck when quarter sawn. The hardest wearing species we stock, and the best choice around water.

  • Cherry

    Warm pink amber that darkens to a deep russet over a few years. It will look noticeably different by year three.

  • Maple

    Near white, fine and even, sometimes with curl or ambrosia streaking. The brightest species we stock and the one we build most kids bunks out of.

  • Sycamore

    Silver tan with a lacewood ray pattern when quarter sawn. Boards vary a lot, so it works best where you want an obvious feature.

  • Ambrosia & salvage

    Beetle tracked, storm fallen and reclaimed local stock. Heavy character, limited supply, priced by the board.

Counterwood is the fabrication division of Bespoke Interior Style, so we are used to working inside someone else's drawing set and someone else's schedule.

Builders, cabinet shops, architects, designers and cabin management companies get shop drawings, lead time letters, staged delivery across a multi unit build, and repeatable specs when a portfolio needs six kitchens to match. Put the unit count on the form and we will quote the whole program instead of a single piece.
